WHLF radio was born in October 1947. WHLF is Halifax County’s first radio station and was founded by the late John L. Cole, Jr, a county native who grew up in the Asbury community of Halifax County.

In the beginning, WHLF was a 250-watt am radio station. Over the years, the station grew with the community and began broadcasting on the fm band in the early 60’s, providing improved service for our listeners and advertising clients. WHLF programming was simulcast on the am and fm bands until the late 90’s when all programming migrated exclusively to the fm band in response to our listeners’ tastes.

The focus of WHLF’s programming over the years has been on Halifax County and it’s towns and communities. WHLF maintains a full time local news staff that covers the area’s news better than anyone else and is the most reliable source for information of local closings and cancellations when the weather turns bad. WHLF continues to be the only live broadcast source of Halifax County Blue Comet football, basketball and baseball games and racing from the South Boston Speedway.
